چکیده

This paper analyses the determinants of internal migration in Spain between 1995 and 2002. After a brief descriptive study, we begin by presenting an analytical model of internal migration flows. Subsequently, we carry out a semiparametric analysis of some of the main factors affecting the size of net migration rates. The general conclusion that we come to is that these rates are mainly influenced by income and climatic conditions differentials between the regions of origin and destination; in addition unemployment and housing prices differentials seem to have a much weaker effect while variables such as aggregate unemployment, on the one side, and human capital and population density differentials, on the other, do no affect net migration rates.

Migration Processes Modeling with Cellular Automation

The problem of interregional migration flows modeling is being studied. The conjecture that modeling household migration behavior at local level in view of community interactions and using cellular automata results in adequate forecasting of interregional migration flows has been numerically confirmed. A computer program was developed in order to implement the cellular automaton suggested in th...

Estimating Interregional Utility Differentials∗

The major objective of this paper is to estimate regional utility levels based on interregional migration data. We first revealed three stylized facts concerning migration behavior by examining long-term Japanese data on interregional migration. We then uncovered inconsistency between net migration and utility differential in the presence of distance-related migration costs. Based on the styliz...

Determinants of Interregional Migration Flows in Korea by Age Groups, 1995-2014

Despite the growing importance of interregional migration at the local level in rapidly aging society, past literature overlooked the relationship between these two demographic phenomena. To better understand the determinants of interregional migration and its implications for population aging, this study estimated fixed-effects models derived from the gravity model of migration using populatio...

The Effect of Changing Interregional Relationships on Employment Changes: A Decomposition Analysis in Two-Regional Input- Output Model

According to the regional economic literature, interregional communication can play an important role in production, followed by production-related variables such as employment. For this reason, changing (strengthening or weakening) inter-regional communication can lead to changes in production and employment in the regions. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the change of...

Wages Differentials and Interregional Migration in the U.S.: an Empirical Test of the “Option Value of Waiting” Theory

The ‘option value of waiting’ theory applied to interregional migration predicts that a potential migrant actually moves only when the wage differential between origin and destination places exceeds a certain threshold, which might be much higher than the Marshallian trigger. In this paper we exploit the panel structure of a dataset on interregional migration among nineteen MSAs in the US from ...
